Jordan Baker's Role
Although Jordan Baker does not have a major role in the story, she can still be evidenced in having input on the story. First of all, she is Daisy's friend and there hints a love interest between her and Nick. After the end of World War I, the role of housewives changed dramatically. They were forced to work and earn their money. Jordan represents one of these "new" women, also known as flappers, of the 1920s - boyish, and self-centered. Her desire for success and a very arrogant attitude are Jordan's main characteristics. This tells us that she has no plans in her life and that she can afford to wait that life happens to them, representing the women's new way of life.
She also represents how the American Dream is achievable. Jordan is one of the few characters that seem to earn her money through use of talent and skill (golf) instead of inheriting it through family connections or illegal transactions. Therefore, her role is to act out how the American Dream is achievable and although she may not be one of the major characters, she has still worked her way to achieve her position and that proves anyone can be able to do so.
